The 2025 Admission Timeline

1

Jan 2025: Application Phase

Submit Portfolio & Application forms for Discretionary Places (DP).

2

Feb – Mar 2025: The Interview Period (CRITICAL)

Schools conduct interviews. This is your only active chance to impress.

3

Jul 2025: Release of Results

Central Allocation results released. “Knocking Door” phase begins (Too late!).

The Harsh Reality: Success Rates

Why relying on “Luck” (Central Allocation) or “Knocking” is dangerous.

Central Allocation
70% (Luck Based)
Discretionary (DP)
30% (Performance Based)
Knocking Door
<1% (Very Risky)
Anson Sir’s Warning: Top schools often have 0-5 places for “Knocking Door”. Do not gamble on July. Win in March.

How Do Schools Decide?

40% Interview

*Typical weighting for DP

  • ■ 40% Interview Performance: Confidence, English, Logic.
  • ■ 50% Academic Rank: School internal results (P5 & P6).
  • ■ 10% ECAs / Others: Awards and conduct.

Insight: Everyone applying has good grades. The Interview is the tie-breaker.

The Interview Day: Step-by-Step

1. Arrival

Arrive 15 mins early. Register with ID card. Staff are observing you from the moment you enter the gate.

2. Waiting Room

Silent reading. Sit upright. No phones. No chatting. Show discipline and patience.

3. The Interview

Usually 10-15 mins. Can be Individual (1-on-1) or Group Discussion (4-6 students).

Format 1: Individual Interview

What to Expect:

  • Language: Usually English & Cantonese (Mixed).
  • Reading Aloud: A short passage (check pronunciation).
  • Comprehension: Answering questions about the passage.
  • Chatting: “Tell me about yourself”, “Why this school?”.
  • Creative Tasks: Describe a picture or object.

Anson Sir’s Tip

If you don’t know a word in the reading passage, do not stop. Use phonics to guess it and keep the rhythm flowing. Confidence > Accuracy.

Format 2: Group Discussion

The most feared format. 4-6 Students. 1 Topic. 5-8 Minutes.

The Leader: Initiates the talk. “Good morning everyone, today our topic is…”
The Facilitator: Invites others. “I agree with Tom. What do you think, Mary?”
The Time-Keeper: Keeps track. “We have 1 minute left, let’s summarize.”

Warning: Do not dominate. Do not interrupt. Aggressive students get low scores.

Grooming: The Visual Score

Before you speak, you are judged.

Boys

  • Shirt tucked in tightly.
  • Top button done.
  • Tie centered and correct length.
  • Short hair, no gel (or very little).
  • Black shoes polished.
  • White socks pulled up.

Girls

  • Skirt length appropriate (knee level).
  • Hair tied back neatly (black/blue ties).
  • No jewelry/bracelets.
  • Clean nails (no polish).
  • Modest shoes.

Common Question 1: Self-Introduction

The “Must-Prepare” Question. usually 1-2 minutes.

❌ The Boring Way

“My name is Tom. I am 11. I live in Shatin. I have a brother. I like swimming.”

(Robot-like, no personality)

✅ The Anson Sir Way

“My name is Tom. People describe me as resilient and creative. My resilience comes from swimming training 3 times a week…”

(Trait-focused, tells a story)

Common Question 2: Why Our School?

Shows your sincerity and research.

Don’t say: “Because it is Band 1” or “Because my mom likes it.”

Key Strategy: Link “School Feature” to “Personal Interest”

  • Step 1: Identify a unique facility (e.g., Aerospace Lab, Swimming Pool, Orchestra).
  • Step 2: State your relevant interest.
  • Step 3: Connect them.

“I want to join La Salle because of the Aerospace Program. I have won robotics awards and I want to apply my coding skills to aviation science here.”

Common Question 3: Weaknesses

A trap question. “What is your greatest weakness?”

Don’t Avoid It

Don’t say “I have no weakness” or “I work too hard” (fake).

The “Improvement Sandwich”

  1. State a real, fixable weakness (e.g., careless in Math).
  2. Immediately state the solution you are doing.
  3. Mention the progress.

“I sometimes make careless mistakes in Math. To fix this, I now check every calculation twice. My marks have improved by 10% this term.”

Creative & Scenario Questions

Testing your logic and adaptability.

Q: “If you could be an animal, what would you be?”

Wrong: “Lion because it is cool.”

Right: “An Ant. Because they are hardworking and great team players, just like me in group projects.”

Q: “How many ping pong balls fit in a bus?”

They don’t want the number. They want the method.

Answer: “First I would estimate the volume of the bus, then the volume of a ball…”

Current Affairs Topics (2025 Focus)

Be prepared for these topics:

  • Environment: Plastic waste, Recycling, Global Warming.
  • Technology: AI (ChatGPT), Smart Cities, Screen time addiction.
  • Social: Elderly care, Mental health of students.

Anson Sir’s Rule:

Always have a Point of View and a Solution.

Don’t just say “It is bad.” Say “It is bad, because… and we can solve it by…”

The “God’s 5-Point Method”

Anson Sir’s Secret Weapon

Most students fail to impress because they stop too early. This framework ensures you score maximum points.

The 5 Steps to a Perfect Answer

1
Point: Direct Answer. (Yes/No/My view is…)
2
Reason: Explain Why. (Because…)
3
Example: General Evidence. (News/Facts)
4
Personal Experience: YOUR Story. (The Score Booster)
5
Suggestion: Future Solution. (The Leader’s Touch)

Deep Dive: Point 4 (Experience)

Why is this the most important point?

  • Uniqueness: Anyone can quote news. Only YOU have your story.
  • Proof: It proves you aren’t just talking empty words.
  • Showcase: A chance to mention awards/STEM projects naturally.

Example:

Instead of just saying “Teamwork is good”…

Say: “In my Robotics Team, we failed 3 times. But I encouraged my team to try a new code, and we finally won Gold. This showed me teamwork is about support during failure.”

Deep Dive: Point 5 (Suggestion)

The “Bonus” Mark for Elite Students.

What is it?

Proposing a new idea or solution to the problem discussed.

Why do it?

It shows Leadership, Creativity, and Initiative. Schools want problem solvers, not just problem identifiers.

Example (Topic: Waste):

Add this at the end:

“Finally, I Suggest the school can start a ‘Green Ambassador’ program where older students teach younger ones about recycling. I would love to lead this.”

Full Script: “How to reduce waste?”

1. Point: Reducing waste is vital for our future.

2. Reason: Landfills are overflowing and it causes pollution.

3. Example: News shows plastic use has doubled in 10 years.

4. Experience: Personally, I organized a beach cleanup last summer. Seeing the amount of trash changed my habits immediately.

5. Suggestion: I suggest schools host ‘No Plastic Days’ and invite guest speakers. This makes sustainability fun and engaging for students.

You Are Ready!

Remember: Preparation = Confidence.
